| TV Series Finales and the NHL Playoffs | |||||||||
| This week we bid adieu to four
long-running television shows. These
programs have been prime-time staples for the past decade, and their
going-off-the-air may cause some of us, er...I mean you...some of you, to be
sad, maybe even cry. Your friends at Fourballs are here to give you a way to hold on to these cherished memories, for at least another two weeks. You see, each show lives on in the form of one of the remaining NHL playoff teams. A bit of a stretch, you say? Perhaps, but I couldn't think of anything else to write about, so you WILL enjoy this- The West Wing (Buffalo Sabres) - The best show you've never seen. Last time you checked it was a totally mediocre show, but now all of a sudden people consider it one of the 'greats'. The Sabres haven't been heard from since a trip to the Cup seven years ago, we have no idea how the hell they got to where they are today either. I also wish I could make a Youngblood connection out of Rob Lowe here but there just isn't and I'd rather not force one. Will and Grace (Carolina Hurricanes) - The guilty pleasure. You've caught a few episodes here and there, probably under the pretense that your girlfriend forced you to watch it. But you know it made you laugh a little bit more than you wanted it to. Just like you're secretly rooting for the Canes. Hockey in the Bible Belt is ridiculous, it's not supposed to be, just like openly gay comedy in prime time. But there they both are, they're here, and they're queer, and you don't want your buddies to know you like it. Malcolm in the Middle (Anaheim Mighty Ducks) - How in the world is this show still around? Just go away already, nobody watches you. This show and this team are what happens when you can't decide whether you're going to cater more to children or to adults. They seem like cheesy kids versions of something trying to keep up with more mature competitors. The cartoon logo is a joke and just the idea that the name "Mighty Ducks" could someday be etched onto Lord Stanley's Cup makes me dry heave. If I shed a tear on your final night it will be a tear of joy, followed of course by a quick wipe of the sleeve, because guys dont cry. That 70's Show (Edmonton Oilers) - Always great to return to the classics. Incredible in its heyday, but then you grew apart. You had flings with other shows in its time slot maybe because the classic couldn't live up to how great it used to be. You hated to see it as a shell of its former self so you moved on. But take advantage of this opportunity to show your appreciation for what they were. You won't see Wayne Gretzky or Michael Kelso this week, but let 'em know you still remember the glory days. |
